What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a genetic autoimmune condition which causes your body to produce an excess of skin cells too quickly. Psoriasis is a common skin condition which can be treated by our dermatologist Dr. David L. Allyn, M.D. at Aesthetic Dermatology, PA in Clermont, FL.
Signs and Symptoms of Psoriasis
Production of excess skin cells causes skin patches. The skin patches can form on the scalp, elbows, behind the knees, and other areas. Psoriasis patches itch, sometimes severely. They appear scaly, and red or white.
Different Types of Psoriasis
Psoriasis can be classified into three types, depending on how much of your body is involved:
- Mild psoriasis, which is psoriasis that has affected less than 3% of your body
- Moderate psoriasis, which is psoriasis that has affected 3% to 10% of your body
- Severe psoriasis, which is psoriasis that has affected over 10% of your body
Psoriasis Treatment Options
Psoriasis treatment can vary, depending on the severity of psoriasis. Your dermatologist may recommend:
- Prescription moisturizing creams, shampoos, or bath treatments.
- Topical steroid treatments to reduce itching and slow down skin cell growth
- Light therapy using natural sunlight, lasers, or phototherapy to eliminate psoriasis patches
- Prescription oral medications including cyclosporine and methotrexate to lower skin cell production and reduce inflammation
- Biologic drugs to suppress the immune system and reduce psoriasis breakouts.

Psoriasis can be managed long-term, with treatments from your dermatologist. It’s also helpful to avoid factors which can trigger a psoriasis outbreak. Psoriasis triggers include:
- Stress
- Illness
- Skin injuries
- Excessive sun exposure
