Understanding Microneedling With Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
We all want to look our best. As you age, the collagen in your skin starts to lose its elasticity and youthful appearance, or you may have a scar that you have always wanted to lessen the texture of because it makes you self-conscious. Dr. David Allyn of Aesthetic Dermatology in Clermont and Lady Lake, FL is a board-certified dermatologist who has many years of experience, especially in the area of microneedling.
What To Know About This Procedure
The process of microneedling involves a small tool with either a small roller with tiny needles or a handheld wand with a patch of circular needles on the tip. The small, very fine needles pierce your skin causing a trigger effect for your body to release collagen to help heal the skin. Because of the collagen released during this process, it also helps minimize the appearance of aging, such as reducing fine lines and softening and blending a scar into normal skin.
PRP is called platelet-rich plasma because it has been "spun" down to a concentrated serum that can be used in healing. The PRP serum is spread over the microneedled area after the session is finished. It has been shown to decrease healing time, swelling, and redness with your session.
Microneedling with PRP for,
- Scars
- Acne-stretch marks
- Age spots-wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation
- Enlarged pores
According to Dr. Allyn of Aesthetic Dermatology located in Clermont and Lady Lake, FL, it is important to say that not everyone can have Microneedling performed. If you are pregnant, have active acne or are on acne medication, have moles or skin tags, are undergoing cancer treatment, develop keloids, or have moles or freckles, this procedure would not be for you.
What An Appointment Looks Like
Before your procedure, our doctor will discuss your health history, and go over the procedure. They may take pictures for reference as to what parts may need to be treated. Before the actual procedure, our doctor may ask you to use creams with vitamin A or C in them to increase collagen production.
Right before your appointment, our doctor will prepare the area with a numbing cream and wait about 45 minutes to make sure you are numb. Our doctor will then use the microneedler machine over the treatment areas. These areas may feel a small discomfort with a warm or scratchy feeling while being treated. Your skin will be red and swollen for about 6 days after the treatment. You can apply cool compresses or ice packs for comfort.
